Airbus a320 Landing  -  Page 2

AIRBUS A320 LANDING ON FLIGHT FROM PORTO ALEGRE  IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL TO SAO PAULO
IFR Departure from Salgado Filho Intl (SBSP) Destination: Congonhas Intl (SBSP) Runway 17R

The Congonhas runway is 6,365 feet, compared with a 7,003-foot runway
at New York's LaGuardia Airport, which accommodates similar planes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

OBSERVATIONS:

I am inclined to believe after flying this simulation that the runway 17R at Salgado Filho Intl is too short for an airplane like the A320 AIRBUS. Even under ideal conditions with a near perfect conditions landing a fully loaded A320 requires more runway to stop safely than what this airport provides.

I can appreciate the problems with landing this plane at night with rain, fog and slick runways at this airport. A runway overrun is highly probable in these conditions.

The problem is that once the pilot realizes that he doesn't have enough runway to land and declares a missed approach, he doesn't have enough room, or time to abort safely and go around.

There a buildings too close to the end of the runway that make it very difficult to gain air speed, pull up and go around.

There is a good reason that pilots call this place the 'Aircraft Carrier' but it differs from the real thing in that it doesn't have any arresting cables!

Descent to final after being cleared by ATC to land on Runway 17R...

Pilots view from cockpit. Runway 17R is on the right…
