AIRBUS A320 LANDING ON FLIGHT FROM PORTO ALEGRE  IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL TO SAO PAULO
IFR Departure from Salgado Filho Intl (SBSP) Destination: Congonhas Intl (SBSP) Runway 17R

The Congonhas runway is 6,365 feet, compared with a 7,003-foot runway
at New York's LaGuardia Airport, which accommodates similar planes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

IN MEMORY OF THOSE THAT WERE LOST ON FLIGHT 3054

CONSIDERATIONS:

It takes a considerable amount distance to stop a 150,000 lb aircraft traveling at 135  - 145 m/hr. It also takes a considerable amount of power to abort a landing at runway level for an airplane that is too far down the runway and slowing for landing.

It takes time to build up enough speed and momentum, even at full power, to develop enough lift to pull up and out quickly when you are too far down the runway and very low.

If there were no obstacles at the end of the runway there would be enough room to develop the power and lift to abort safely and go around.

Aiming a short runway at residential areas, or allowing buildings to be errected too close to the end of runways is a recipe for disaster..

This a prime example of how these two no no's intersect to spell disaster...

Touchdown  - Air Speed 146 m/hr. Notice how close the back end of the runway is..

At Touchdown looking forward, applying breaks..
